Previously, Paul was the  Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Wells Fargo & Company (“Wells Fargo”).

Paul joined Wells Fargo in 1970, served as Vice Chairman from 1981 to 1984, President and Chief Operating Officer from 1984 to 1995, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer from January 1995 to May 2001 when he retired from Wells Fargo.

Paul is currently Chairman of Accel-KKR and is active in various businesses and investments.  Paul's past board positions include Safeway(Lead Independent Director), KKR Financial Holding LLC (Chairman), PhelpsDodge, Vodafone Group Plc (Deputy Chairman and Lead Independent Director),Willis Group Holdings Ltd., Xstrata, Blackhawk Network Holdings, KSL Resorts, the San Francisco Symphony, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.  Paul also served on the Federal Advisory Council to the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 1991, acting as President of the Council in 1991, reporting to Alan Greenspan as Chairman.

Paul attended Amherst College, holds a MS in finance from the University of Arizona and an MBA from the University of California.
